West Thurrocks Unusual marine Lump fish visitor
One of the more unusual marine visitors to West Thurrock was a monster Lump fish that was caught in the band screens in April 1970.
The lump fish weighed 3lbs 4oz and measured 14inches long from lip to tail fin.
The staff are puzzled
The size of the fish foxed staff at West Thurrock, as according to the "Thames Estuary" book specimens previously caught in the Thames measured just two-and-a-half inches long and weighed a quarter of an ounce.
As well as several local names-sea owl, cock paddle and stone clagger-in Denmark the lump fish is known as the sea hare and its eggs are highly prized as a Danish "caviare"
Frozen ? Certainly not !
The tale of the two Salmon caught at West Thurrock Power Station ( In the band Screens ) caused a few ripples in angling circles.
You are kidding !
Local Thurrock fisherman Mr Lou Yallop claimed that the Salmon found at West Thurrock was actually a dead Salmon he had caught in Ireland a year before and stored in his freezer.
Passed the sell buy date
When his wife read that the fish should be eaten within two months of being frozen, Mr Yallop threw the the fish in the river Thames.
Following extensive test carried out at the Natural History Museum in London, the Salmon was pronounced definitely fresh.
Was it you ?
There were at least 10 people on site at West Thurrock who could vouch that the Salmon was breathing when taken from the river, were you one of the witnesses ?
The coincidence that two salmon-one dead and one alive-should be found on the same day after a gap of 150 years seems incredible
